Human Rights Night, December 9th

Members of the Mariposa County Chapter of the United Nations Association (UNA) will travel to San Francisco on Wednesday, December 9, to attend "Human Rights Night," commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Speakers at the event will include Martin Luther King III, and Arun and Sunanda Gandhi.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations 50 years ago, on December 10, 1948.

Other speakers at Human Rights Night will be civil rights leader Dr. Clifford Uyeda, and Iris Chang, author of The Rape of Nanking.

The event is being sponsored by the Northern California Division of the United Nations Association, the Alliance for Preserving the Truth of the Sino-Japanese War, and other Bay Area Human Rights organizations.

According to event organizers, "it is our mission to readdress the human rights issues that have plagued our past and still haunt our future. We hope to begin resolution and healing of past wounds in order to lay a foundation for both regional and global peace."

Phyllis Becker, president of the Mariposa chapter, said "the local UNA is proud to be participating because the 'Universal Declaration' is a milestone in the world's long struggle for human rights. It recognizes the inherent dignity of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world."

The public is invited. The charge is $20 per person. Tickets may be obtained by calling the BASS Agency (510) 762-2277, or City Box Office (415) 392-4400.
