CENTRAL AMERICA AID - Local organizations and individuals opened their hearts this week to collect and send hundreds of dollars worth of groceries, clothing, blankets, cash, and other items to Hurricane-ravished Central America. Shown above with boxes of aid supplies are Tiffany Newberry (left) and Phyllis Becker, of the Mariposa County Chapter of the United Nations Association. Many community organizations joined together in the relief effort. Those who participated include the Mariposa Lutheran Church, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Sierra Unitarians, Head Start parents, Merced County Office of Education, the Baha'i Faith, Mariposa County High School, and other concerned citizens. Residents in much of Central America are attempting to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch, which left thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless.
