The Mariposa County Chapter of the United Nations Association is making copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) available to local residents at no cost in observance of the 50th anniversary of that document, according to Phyllis Becker, local UNA president.

"This universal declaration is a milestone in the long struggle for human rights. It recognizes the inherent dignity of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world," Becker said.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations, meeting in Paris, on December 10, 1948. According to Becker, it was the first international document to set forth fundamental human rights and freedoms for all.

"The rights covered in the declaration," she continued, "include the right to life, liberty, and security of person; the right to own property, the right to freedom of opinion and expression; the right to education, freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; and the right to freedom from torture and degrading treatment, among others."

Those interested may write to the Mariposa United Nations Association at PO Box 134, Mariposa, CA 95338, to request a free copy, Becker concluded.
